What a kit is here, and what it is not
A kit on this site is not a product bundle. It starts as a load manifest — the same sourced device figures the sizing engine uses everywhere else — and works outward from there: compute the energy and the worst instant, find the stations that actually pass both, then set down what else has to be in the box for the plan to work at two in the morning. A kit publishes only when that math resolves to at least one passing station, which is why this list is shorter than the number of situations we could name.
Choose by situation, not by the station inside
Two kits can compute the same station from completely different manifests, so picking the kit whose recommendation you already like tells you nothing useful. The manifest is the part that differs, and the checklist follows from it: a CPAP plan and a refrigerator plan that both land on the same unit still need different cables, different measurements, and different failure modes rehearsed. Read the loads first and the hardware second.
The cheap items are the ones that decide it
Most buyers have this backwards. The station is the expensive line and it is rarely the line that fails — it either clears the sizing check or it does not, and the page tells you which before you spend anything. What actually strands people is a missing DC cord, an adapter that does not fit the outlet the appliance shipped with, or a load nobody ever measured. Those items cost a few dollars each, and they are the difference between a plan and an assumption.
Why there is no freeze-dried food on these lists
A product earns a retail link here only if it connects to the station electrically — a cable, a panel, an adapter, a 12 V load — or if it materially changes the station's energy budget, such as a meter that sizes the plan or an appliance that moves work off the battery entirely. Everything else is general preparedness merchandise we have no basis to rank, because nothing about it touches the energy budget. A carbon-monoxide alarm on an outage checklist would be an opinion wearing a commission; items like that can still appear as generic guidance, they simply never carry a link.
What a checklist cannot tell you
These lists are derived, not tested. They say what the electrical plan requires and what a careful person rehearses before relying on it. They do not say which brand of cable lasts longest, because no specification sheet answers that question. The station recommendation carries the same limit as every computed pick on this site: it is only as good as the manifest behind it, and a load you have not measured is the input most likely to be wrong.
Rehearse it once, on an ordinary day
The one instruction that applies to every kit here: assemble it and run the plan for an hour when nothing is wrong. Nearly everything that goes wrong is discoverable in that hour — a plug that does not fit, a refrigerator that trips the inverter the moment its compressor starts, a solar panel with no cable that reaches the station. None of it is discoverable at the moment the power actually goes out.
