Best Portable Power Stations for Home Backup (2026)

The best portable power stations for home backup in 2026 — units with the AC output to carry a refrigerator, Wi-Fi, and lights through an outage, and a published transfer time so you know what happens at the moment the grid drops. Ordered by battery-side usable watt-hours, because for a box that lives in a utility room the question is how many hours it holds. A whole-home "solar generator" is this same hardware with a panel in the carton: the battery and inverter decide whether your fridge stays cold, and the panel only decides how you refill it. We rank the box, not a bundle, and we lab-test nothing.

What the Home backup ranking leaves out

Why this cohort, not the overall top ten

Household backup has a hard floor that portability rankings ignore: an inverter big enough to start a refrigerator compressor, and roughly a kilowatt-hour before the arithmetic gets depressing. Both gates are set at what an outage actually asks for rather than at a round number, which is why several highly-rated smaller units are absent from a list they would otherwise top.

Where buyers get this ranking wrong

Counting up the wattage of everything in the house. Backup is a triage exercise: the fridge, the router, some lights and phone charging is most of what people actually miss, and it is a fraction of the total the panel is rated for. Buyers who total the whole house conclude nothing portable will help and give up on a purchase that would have covered the things they minded losing.

What this ranking cannot see

Eligibility is a specification test, not an installation one. Whether a station reaches the sockets you care about is a question about extension leads or an electrician, and running circuits rather than devices needs hardware this page does not rank. The capacity floor also assumes a modern refrigerator; an older one changes the sum.

What earns a spot

  • Eligibility floor: ~1 kWh or larger, an 1,800 W AC inverter or better, and a published UPS/EPS transfer time.
  • The transfer time is the part most lists skip. Backup means the switchover happens without you in the room, and a station that does not publish how long its output is interrupted has not told you whether your router, your desktop or your fridge controller rides through it.
  • A missing transfer figure is a missing figure, not a slow one. We leave those units off rather than assume a number, which is why this list is shorter than the catalogue of stations that could physically do the job.
  • Order is battery-side usable watt-hours, largest first — not the nameplate on the box, and deliberately not our overall score. The overall score weighs carry weight and fan noise, and neither of those is something you experience during an outage; hours of essentials is.
  • Every unit's own page carries its composite, so a big pack with a weak build is still visible as one. This page decides what to shortlist, not what to buy sight unseen.
  • Runtime for your specific devices is a separate question — size it with our sizing tool.

What this rule turns away

45 of 80 tracked stations meet this list's eligibility rule, and the 8 highest-scoring of them are ranked above. The highest-scoring stations the rule excludes are Goal Zero Yeti 300, Bluetti AC70 and Pecron F5000LFP. They rank well elsewhere on the site; they do not answer this question.

Frequently asked

What size power station do I need for home backup?
For a refrigerator plus a few essentials, most homes want at least ~1 kWh of battery-side usable capacity, sized up for longer outages or bigger loads. Use our sizing tool to match capacity to your actual devices and outage length.
Can a portable power station run a refrigerator?
Yes — every unit on this list has the continuous and surge output to start and run a typical fridge. How long it runs depends on the fridge, battery-side usable capacity, and conversion efficiency; a larger or expandable model buys more hours.
Why does a station need a published transfer time to appear here?
Because backup is about the instant the grid drops, not the hours afterwards. A unit that does not publish how long its output is interrupted during switchover has left the one backup-specific question unanswered, and we would rather show a shorter list than fill it by assuming a figure.
How long will one of these last in a real outage?
For a refrigerator plus essentials, a midsize unit covers most of a day and a large one stretches to two or three when the fridge is cycled deliberately rather than left running.
Can I power my whole house with a portable station?
No, and the honest version of this purchase is that you are not trying to. It covers the handful of loads that matter during an outage, which is a different and much cheaper goal than whole-home backup.
What about heating and air conditioning?
Both are out of reach for anything on this list except in short bursts. Resistive heating in particular consumes more in an hour than most of these stations hold, which is why outage planning that involves temperature usually ends up being about blankets, shade and a single room rather than about batteries.
