Expansion changes what a purchase is: instead of buying all the storage you might one day need, you buy the inverter and add capacity when the budget or the need arrives. Ordering on the supported ceiling shows which systems have real headroom designed in, as opposed to a single optional pack bolted on to satisfy a feature list.
Believing that adding batteries adds power. It does not — the inverter watts are fixed by the head unit, so a fully expanded stack runs the same appliances for longer, never more appliances at once. Buyers who expand hoping to finally start the well pump discover that the limit they hit was never the capacity.
The ceiling is what the manufacturer supports, not what anybody has assembled. Reaching it often costs several times the price of the base unit and produces an installation heavy enough that it stops being portable in any useful sense, and no specification sheet tells you whether the expansion packs will still be sold in three years.
