The MSRP Honesty Report

By the BatteryRank Engineering Team · Updated

Every brand in this category prints a list price. We tracked 693 price changes across 24 models to find out how often anyone could actually pay it.

Computed from tracked street prices as of 2026-07-26.

For every brand we can measure, the list price is a fiction

Across 4 brands, 24 models and 6,721 model-days of tracked street price, the highest share of days any brand spent at its own list price was 0.5%. Jackery was at list on 0.0% of tracked days, with a typical street price 44% below list.

That is the practical takeaway for a buyer: a percentage-off badge in this category is measured against a number that is not a price. The question worth asking is never “how big is the discount” but “is this cheap against what this model has actually sold for” — which is what every deal verdict on this site is computed against, and why none of them quotes a percent-off figure.

How this is computed

  1. 01Each model resolves to one price series — the Amazon new-condition spine where it exists, otherwise the brand storefront. Bundles are dropped; they are not unit prices.
  2. 02The feed records price changes, so each change carries forward to the next one to produce a daily street price. Out-of-stock and MSRP-snapback spans are excluded — a price nobody could pay is not price history.
  3. 03A day counts as “at list” when the street price is within 2% of the manufacturer list price. Typical discount is the median across all tracked days.
  4. 04Brand figures are day-weighted across its qualifying models, so a model tracked for a year counts for more than one tracked for seven months.
  5. 05Discontinued models are excluded. A brand’s clearance pricing on a model it no longer sells says nothing about what its list prices mean today.

Why most brands are not in the table

A carried-forward day is not an observation. One tracked price change stretched across a year would look like a year of evidence and prove nothing, so the evidence bar counts real price changes: a model needs 12 changes over at least 180 days, and a brand needs 3 such models before we will characterise its pricing. These brands are in the catalog but below that bar, and we will not publish a verdict the data cannot carry:

  • DJI 2 models in the catalog; no model reaches 12 tracked price changes over 180+ days.
  • Goal Zero 2 models in the catalog; no model reaches 12 tracked price changes over 180+ days.
  • FlashFish 1 model in the catalog; no model reaches 12 tracked price changes over 180+ days.
  • Fossibot 1 model in the catalog; no model reaches 12 tracked price changes over 180+ days.
  • Oupes 1 model in the catalog; no model reaches 12 tracked price changes over 180+ days.
  • Pecron 1 model in the catalog; no model reaches 12 tracked price changes over 180+ days.
  • VTOMAN 1 model in the catalog; 1 clears the evidence bar, 3 needed to characterise a brand.
  • Zendure 1 model in the catalog; no model reaches 12 tracked price changes over 180+ days.

What this report does not show

It measures list price against tracked street price, and nothing else. A deep discount is not evidence of a good product, a shallow one is not evidence of a bad one, and a brand whose list price is fiction is not thereby dishonest about anything else — permanent discounting is a category-wide convention, not a scandal at any single company. Our own coverage is Amazon-weighted, so a brand that sells mostly through its own storefront or through retailers we do not track will be represented by a narrower slice of its real pricing than these numbers suggest.

The underlying per-model history is published on each model’s price-history page, the scoring and fair-price formulas are in the methodology, and the identity table is downloadable from /data.
